Choosing a smartwatch for an older adult

The best smartwatch for a senior isn't the flashiest — it's the one with reliable fall detection, a simple face, and a battery that lasts. Here's how to choose, and why the watch is only half the picture.

What actually matters

For an older wearer, prioritize, in order: a large readable face, long battery life so charging isn't a daily chore, reliable built-in fall detection and SOS (a feature of the watch's own operating system), and health sensors for activity. Cellular capability is a bonus for times the phone is out of reach. Brand prestige and app ecosystems matter far less than whether your parent will actually wear it and charge it.

The watch is only half the picture

A smartwatch's own operating system may detect a fall and run its own SOS flow — but on its own, it typically notifies a preset contact or an emergency line, not your family. KinectedCare adds a different layer: the person has one clear HELP button1 that alerts the whole family care team at once, and the same watch's day-to-day activity becomes a wellbeing snapshot the whole family can follow. The watch handles its own emergency features; KinectedCare keeps the family connected and coordinated.

Works with what they already own

KinectedCare reads a small set of activity data (sleep, steps, and stairs) through Apple Health and Health Connect, so a wide range of capable watches work — there's no special KinectedCare hardware to buy. If your parent already wears a smartwatch they like, you may be most of the way there already.

Critical alerts that reach a caregiver through silent and Do Not Disturb depend on device settings and operating-system support. Cellular and network data rates may apply.
