Smartwatch for seniors: how to choose the right one

The best smartwatch for a senior isn't the flashiest. It's the one that gets worn, charged and understood. Here is a plain way to choose, a comparison of the main types of watch, and why the watch is only half the picture.

What to look for in a smartwatch for a senior

For an older wearer, these matter more than brand or price, roughly in this order:

1. A large, readable display. Look for adjustable text size, good brightness in daylight, and a watch face that shows the time clearly.
2. Battery life and easy charging. A watch that is dead is a watch that does nothing. A charging routine your parent can keep matters as much as the number of days on the box.
3. Fall detection and emergency calling. These are features of the watch’s own operating system, and they vary by model, settings, age and country. Check that they are available and turned on.
4. Comfort and fit. A soft, secure band, a case that is not bulky, and water resistance for the shower and sink.
5. Simplicity. A few clear buttons and a face with the time and one or two shortcuts. Fewer notifications means less confusion.
6. Connectivity. Many watches rely on a nearby phone. A cellular model can work when the phone is out of reach, but usually needs a plan.
7. Activity features. Step and sleep tracking can be useful for a family snapshot, if your parent is comfortable sharing it.

Four types of watch compared

Products change every year, so it helps to compare types. This is general, and every model differs, so check the maker’s details for the exact watch.

Without a phone: standalone and cellular watches

Some people want a watch that works even when the phone is left on the counter. Shoppers sometimes call these a standalone smartwatch or a “watch phone” for seniors. They have their own cellular connection, so they can call for help without a phone nearby.

• Apple Watch has cellular models. Apple says Fall Detection can use a cellular, Wi-Fi calling or satellite connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone.
• Pixel Watch has LTE models that can call emergency services without the phone, with an active LTE connection. Google says the Wi-Fi model relies on the paired phone being nearby.
• Senior-specific watches commonly include built-in cellular, usually with a monthly subscription.

The trade-offs are a plan to pay for, coverage where your parent lives, and a battery that works harder. It is most worthwhile when your parent often leaves the house without the phone.

Apple Watch or an Android watch?

Choose the watch that matches your parent’s phone. An Apple Watch pairs with an iPhone. Watches that run Wear OS, including Google’s Pixel Watch, pair with Android phones. Mixing them generally doesn’t work well, so check compatibility before you buy. Apple lists Fall Detection on Apple Watch SE or later, Series 4 or later, and Ultra; Google lists it on Pixel Watch through Pixel Watch 4. Both are for adults and available in a list of countries. Smartwatch or medical-alert watch?

• A regular smartwatch is worn for everyday reasons, so it carries little stigma and is more likely to be on the wrist when it matters. There is no monitoring subscription, though a cellular plan costs extra. See why medical alert stigma is real.
• A senior-specific or medical-alert watch can be simpler and may connect to a live response center, usually for a monthly fee. Fall detection may be an add-on. Compare the terms: what the fee covers, whether a person answers at any hour, who is contacted next, and whether there is a contract. A checklist to compare any watch

• Does it detect hard falls, and is that on by default or something you must turn on?
• Can it call for help from the wrist, and does it need the phone or a cellular plan?
• How long does the battery last in real use, and how does it charge?
• Can the text be made large, and is the watch face simple?
• Is it comfortable and water resistant?
• Is it compatible with your parent’s phone?
• What are the full costs: the watch, any plan or monthly fee, a spare charger?
• Who is contacted when it alerts, and does the whole family hear?
• Is there a return period if your parent doesn’t like it?

The watch is only half the picture

A capable smartwatch detects a fall and runs its own emergency response, but on its own it typically contacts an emergency line and perhaps preset contacts, not your whole family.
