When is it time to consider assisted living for a parent?

It is time to start looking when your parent can no longer live safely or comfortably at home, even with help from family and local services. The best time to learn about the options is before a crisis. Visit places early, include your parent in the decision, and use respite care as a stepping stone if it helps.

Updated October 2026.

The short version

  • Look when support at home is no longer enough, not only after a crisis.
  • Learn the options early: in-home help, assisted living, nursing homes, other communities.
  • Tour early, so the idea is familiar.
  • Include your parent as far as possible.
  • Look after your own limits too.

Signs the current setup is stretched

The National Institute on Aging notes that sometimes an older person can no longer live safely or comfortably at home, and may need more help than family or friends can provide. A pattern is the signal, not a single event: more help needed with everyday tasks, a home that is hard to manage, a care load that is wearing out the family, or a parent who is often alone and struggling. See 10 signs a parent can no longer live alone and what ADLs and IADLs mean.

The kinds of places

  • Assisted living: housing with help for everyday tasks.
  • Nursing homes: a higher level of daily and medical care.
  • Continuing care communities and other residences: places that combine more than one level.

Names and what they include vary by area, so ask each place what it provides.

Starting the conversation

  • Choose a calm moment, not a crisis.
  • Begin with what they want: their own routines, friends, familiar things.
  • Ask what would make them feel safer or less alone.
  • Suggest looking, not deciding. “Can we just see what is out there?”

Tour before you need to

Seeing a few places early turns a frightening idea into a familiar one. Take your parent if they are willing. Our questions to ask when touring can help.

Help in between

You can often add more support at home first, such as in-home help, meal delivery or a few days of respite care. Your local Area Agency on Aging can point you to options. Use the Eldercare Locator to find yours.

Look after yourself

A decision should not rest on one exhausted person. Share the load, and see caregiver burnout and respite care.

Where KinectedCare fits

KinectedCare is a privacy-first app for the whole family, free to start on iOS and Android. A CareTeam gives siblings, friends and neighbors one shared place for notes and updates, and your parent stays in charge of what is shared. It is not a medical device or an emergency service. It can help the family stay in step while you explore options, and keep everyone informed along the way.

Questions people ask

Who decides whether a parent moves?
Wherever possible, your parent. If you are worried about their ability to decide, talk with their doctor.
What if my parent refuses to even talk about it?
Do not force it. Ask what worries them, offer to look without committing, and come back to it later. See how to talk about accepting help.
How much does it cost?
Costs and what is covered vary widely, and we do not give figures. The National Institute on Aging, your local Area Agency on Aging and Medicare.gov are good places to start.
Is this medical or legal advice?
No. It is general information. A doctor, social worker or other qualified professional can advise on your family’s situation.
Does KinectedCare replace emergency services?
No. KinectedCare is not a medical device or an emergency service. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.
