Snowbird parents: how to stay connected when they head south

When a parent spends months in another state, or another country, the distance doubles. Here is how to prepare before they go, and stay close while they are away.

Before they leave, share contacts and medical information, line up a local neighbor or friend, and set a routine for staying in touch. While they are away, use a shared CareTeam so the family sees the same updates, and give your parent a way to reach everyone at once. KinectedCare’s HELP button works wherever the phone has a connection.1

Updated October 2026.

The short version

  • Before they go, share contacts, doctors and medications.
  • Line up a local contact near the second home.
  • Agree a routine that works across time zones.
  • Know how to reach local emergency services where they are.
  • Keep the whole family on the same page.

Before they leave

  • Write down their address and local emergency number at the second home, and where the nearest hospital is.
  • Share a list of doctors, medications and allergies, and confirm they have enough medication for the trip.
  • Find a neighbor, friend or property manager near the second home who has your number.
  • Check that their phone plan and watch work where they will be.

While they are away

Agree on a regular call or message that works across time zones. Keep notes and updates in one shared place so siblings and friends see the same thing. A shared CareTeam, such as KinectedCare’s, does this for free.

Safety while they travel

KinectedCare gives your parent a HELP button on their phone or watch that alerts the whole CareTeam at once, wherever they have a data connection.1 When a fall-detection-capable watch detects a fall, the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam. Fall detection availability depends on the watch and the country, so check the watch’s own settings for where your parent will be. In an emergency, your parent or a local contact should call the local emergency number first.

When they come home

Check in on how the trip went, update medications and contacts, and see whether anything changed in their health or routine while they were away.

Questions people ask

Does KinectedCare work in another country?
The HELP button needs a working data connection on the phone or watch. Features such as fall detection are the watch maker’s and may differ by country, so check the watch’s settings for the places your parent will be.
Who should I contact if I can’t reach my parent while they are away?
Start with the local neighbor or friend you arranged. If you are worried they may be hurt or in danger, contact local emergency services or ask local authorities for a welfare check.
How often should we be in touch?
Agree a rhythm that suits both of you, then keep it predictable. A regular call matters more than a frequent one.
Does KinectedCare detect falls?
No. Fall detection is the watch’s own feature. When a fall-detection-capable smartwatch detects a fall, the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response, and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam.
Does KinectedCare replace emergency services?
No. KinectedCare is not a medical device or an emergency service. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.
