How do I set up a smartwatch for an elderly parent?
Make it easy to read and easy to live with: pair it with their phone, enlarge the text, choose a simple watch face, agree on a daily charging routine, and check that fall detection and the emergency features are on where the watch has them. Set it up together and explain each feature. Then add KinectedCare for HELP from the wrist.1
Updated October 2026.
The short version
- Pair it with their phone and update both.
- Enlarge the text and choose a simple watch face.
- Turn on fall detection and emergency features where available.
- Agree on a charging routine and a charger spot.
- Practice together without placing a real emergency call.
Set it up together
- Pair and update. Pair the watch with your parent’s phone and install any updates on both.
- Make it readable. Increase text size and brightness, and pick a face that shows the time and one or two shortcuts.
- Turn on the safety features. Menu names differ by watch, so use the maker’s instructions to check fall detection, emergency calling and emergency contacts. Fall detection may be off until you enable it, and it is not available on every model or in every country.
- Add emergency information to the phone. See setting up emergency contacts and a medical ID.
- Set a charging routine, such as while having breakfast, and give the charger a fixed spot.
- Practice. Walk through the buttons and screens. Don’t place a real emergency call to test; follow the watch maker’s instructions for checking the features.
Add KinectedCare
KinectedCare supports Apple Watch and Wear OS watches. Install it on your parent’s phone and yours, create the CareTeam, and your parent can press HELP from the wrist to alert everyone at once. When a fall-detection-capable watch detects a fall, the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam.1 The watch’s daily activity can also appear, with your parent’s permission, as a snapshot of sleep, steps and stairs.
Keep it going
Check in after a week and a month: Is it comfortable? Is it charged? Are the settings still on? A watch that is worn and charged is the one that helps. See why a smartwatch matters for older adults and choosing a smartwatch.
