What happens if my parent's phone dies or goes offline?

If your parent’s phone goes quiet, because the battery died, the signal dropped or the phone closed the app, any alert from that phone can’t reach you. KinectedCare keeps a simple “still here” check, and if the phone goes quiet the CareTeam is told, so you are not relying on a safety net that is down. It says the phone has gone quiet, not why.

Updated October 2026.

The short version

  • An alert can only be sent from a phone that is on and connected.
  • KinectedCare checks the phone is still here; if it goes quiet, the CareTeam is told.
  • When the phone checks in again, the CareTeam gets an all-clear.
  • The notice means the phone went quiet, not that something has happened to your parent.
  • It is one still-here signal: no history, and no everyday screen showing what they do.

Why a quiet phone matters

The dangerous failure is not an alert that is late. It is a family believing a parent is protected when the phone that would send the alert is off, out of signal or shut down by its own battery saver. You find out only when you need it and it does not arrive.

What KinectedCare does

Your parent’s phone sends a simple “still here” signal. The background check, which does not need the app to be opened, is part of KinectedGuard (including the free trial) and needs the location permission on your parent’s phone set to always allow. Without that, the check only runs when the app is opened. If the signal stops, the CareTeam gets a notification that the phone has gone quiet. When the phone checks back in, they get an all-clear. One quiet phone means one notice, not a string of them.

It is a safety-net check. It does not record what your parent does or how they are. It holds the last time the phone was in contact, and whether the phone appeared to be moving, never where it is, and it carries no health information.

What to do if you get the notice

  1. Try calling your parent, and try again a few minutes later.
  2. Think about the obvious reasons: a dead battery, a phone left in another room, or no signal at their location.
  3. Call a neighbor or friend who can knock on the door.
  4. If you cannot reach them and are worried, ask for a welfare check from local services. See what to do if a parent is not answering the phone.
  5. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.

Habits that help

  • Charge the phone on a routine, such as every night by the bed.
  • Keep it where your parent can reach it, and ask them to tell you if it will be off for a while.
  • Make sure location is set to always allow for KinectedCare on their phone, and check the phone maker’s battery and background settings so the app is not shut down. Menu names differ by phone, so follow the maker’s instructions.

What it is not

It is not a fall detector, a health monitor or an emergency service. If a fall-detection-capable smartwatch detects a fall, the watch’s own system handles the emergency response and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam, which needs the phone to be in contact. The still-here check is how you learn when it is not.1

Questions people ask

What if my parent turns their phone off on purpose?
The CareTeam may get a notice that the phone has gone quiet. It cannot tell the difference, so a call to your parent is the first step.
Does the still-here signal tell me where my parent is?
No. The still-here signal itself carries no location. It only says the phone is in contact.
Does it show what my parent is doing on their phone?
No. It is one still-here signal, overwritten each time, with no history. See does KinectedCare watch what my parent does?
Does it always work?
No safety tool always works. A notice depends on the phone and the notification system, and a quiet phone says nothing about the reason. Treat it as one more way to know, not a guarantee.
Does KinectedCare detect falls or monitor health?
No. KinectedCare does not detect falls or monitor health. The still-here check only tells the CareTeam that the phone itself has gone quiet. Fall detection is the watch’s own feature, and the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response.
Does KinectedCare replace emergency services?
No. KinectedCare is not a medical device or an emergency service. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.
