What should my parent do when the watch asks if they fell?

Look at the watch and respond. If they are hurt or cannot get up, they should call for help (or let the countdown finish). If they are fine, they should tap “I’m OK” or cancel before the call starts. If a call starts by mistake, they should stay on the line and tell the dispatcher they are okay. It helps to practice this once, with the family.

The short version

  • If hurt or unable to get up: ask for help or let the watch call.
  • If fine: tap “I’m OK” or cancel during the countdown.
  • If a call starts by mistake: stay on and say you are okay.
  • Tell the family afterward.
  • Practice the steps once.

What the watch does

After a hard fall, the watch alerts the wearer. On an Apple Watch it taps the wrist, sounds an alarm and shows an alert; if the wearer is still for about a minute, a 30-second countdown begins, and the watch then calls emergency services. A Pixel Watch waits about 30 seconds, then vibrates, rings and prompts, and calls after about 60 seconds without a response.

What your parent should do

  1. Stay calm and check yourself. Can you move? Are you hurt?
  2. If you need help, use the emergency call on the watch, or call out and let the countdown finish.
  3. If you are fine, tap “I’m OK” or Close, or cancel during the countdown.
  4. If a call started, do not hang up. Say you are okay and give your location, so the dispatcher can stand down.
  5. Tell family what happened, even if it was a false alarm.

Why practice helps

The alerts are loud and sudden. A parent who has seen them once is less likely to panic or to ignore them. Practice on the watch with the family, following the maker’s instructions, and do not place a real emergency call to test.

Common causes of false alarms

Both makers say high-impact activity may trigger fall detection, so false alarms can happen. Explain to your parent what the alert looks like and what to do, so a false alarm is a minor event.

Where KinectedCare fits

If a fall-detection-capable watch detects a fall, KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam after the watch has acted.1 If it was a false alarm, your parent can let the family know. They can also press HELP on the phone or watch at any time. See who is notified when a smartwatch detects a fall.

Questions people ask

What if my parent accidentally calls emergency services?
They should stay on the line, say it was an accident and that they are okay. Hanging up can lead the dispatcher to send help to check.
How do I cancel a fall alert?
On an Apple Watch, tap Close or “I’m OK”, or Cancel during the countdown. On a Pixel Watch, respond to the prompt on the watch. The exact buttons depend on the model and software.
What if my parent does not hear the alarm?
Make sure sound and haptics are on and the watch is worn snugly. Practice so the alert is familiar.
Should my parent tell me about false alarms?
Yes. It helps the family understand what happened and keeps the alert from being ignored the next time.
Does KinectedCare detect falls?
No. Fall detection is the watch’s own feature. When a fall-detection-capable smartwatch detects a fall, the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response, and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam.
Does KinectedCare replace emergency services?
No. KinectedCare is not a medical device or an emergency service. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.
