How does Pixel Watch fall detection work?

When a Pixel Watch detects a hard fall, it waits about 30 seconds, then vibrates, rings loudly and asks whether you want to call emergency services. If there is no response, it sounds the alarm again and calls emergency services after about 60 seconds with an automated message, sharing location if permitted. It may not detect all falls. KinectedCare adds notifying the whole CareTeam.1

Updated October 2026.

The short version

  • A hard fall triggers a wait, then a vibration, ring and prompt.
  • With no response, it alarms again and calls emergency services after about 60 seconds.
  • LTE models can call without the phone; the Wi-Fi model needs the phone nearby.
  • You turn it on in the watch’s Safety settings; adults only.
  • It may not detect all falls.

The sequence, step by step

  1. A hard fall is detected. The watch waits about 30 seconds.
  2. It prompts the wearer. It vibrates, rings loudly and asks whether to call emergency services.
  3. If there is no response, it vibrates and sounds the alarm again.
  4. After about 60 seconds, it calls emergency services with an automated voice message, and shares the location if location permission was granted.

Models, age and setup

  • Models: Google lists Fall Detection on Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4.
  • Setup: Google’s steps say to turn it on in the watch’s Safety settings or in the Pixel Watch app.
  • Age and country: it is available only to adults (18, or 21 in some countries) and in a list of supported countries. If you travel to an unsupported region it becomes unavailable.

Connectivity

LTE models can call emergency services without a phone, but need an active LTE connection. The Wi-Fi model relies on the paired phone being nearby and connected by Bluetooth. A Pixel Watch is designed to pair with an Android phone, so check Google’s compatibility details for your parent’s phone.

Limits Google states

Google says Fall Detection may not detect all falls, that high-impact activities may trigger it, and that the watch may not be reliable for emergency communications. Treat it as one layer of safety.

Where KinectedCare fits

The LTE models can call on their own with an active LTE connection. The Wi-Fi model needs the paired phone nearby.
Is it on by default?
Google’s setup steps tell you to turn it on in the Safety settings, and the page does not say it is on by default. Check the watch.
