How does Apple Watch fall detection work?

When an Apple Watch detects a hard fall, it taps the wrist, sounds an alarm and shows an alert. If the wearer is moving, it waits for a response. If they seem still for about a minute, a 30-second countdown starts, and then the watch calls emergency services. Afterward it texts the wearer’s emergency contacts. It cannot detect all falls. KinectedCare adds notifying the whole CareTeam.1

The short version

  • A hard fall triggers a tap, alarm and alert.
  • If the wearer is moving, it waits; if still for about a minute, a countdown starts.
  • After the countdown, it calls emergency services and plays a recorded message with the location.
  • It then texts emergency contacts from Medical ID.
  • It cannot detect all falls, and it can trigger by mistake.

The sequence, step by step

  1. A hard fall is detected. The watch taps the wrist, sounds an alarm and shows an alert.
  2. The wearer can respond. They can start an emergency call, or dismiss the alert with Close or “I’m OK”.
  3. If they are moving, the watch waits for a response and does not call automatically.
  4. If they are still for about a minute, a 30-second countdown starts, with taps and a louder alarm. They can cancel it.
  5. If the countdown ends, the watch calls emergency services. A recorded message says a hard fall was detected and gives the location.
  6. After the call, the watch texts the wearer’s emergency contacts with the location and a note that a hard fall was detected.

Who and what it covers

  • Models: Apple Watch SE or later, Series 4 or later, and Ultra or later.
  • Age: it is available only to people 18 or older, and turns on automatically for people who entered an age of 55 or older.
  • Connection: it needs a cellular, Wi-Fi calling or satellite connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone.
  • Emergency contacts: they come from the Medical ID, and emergency services cannot be set as a contact.

Limits Apple states

Apple says the watch cannot detect all falls, that high-impact activity may be detected as a fall, and that Wrist Detection must be on for automatic calls. Some cellular networks may not accept emergency calls from a watch that is not set up for cellular.

Where KinectedCare fits

The watch detects the fall and its operating system handles the emergency response. KinectedCare then notifies the whole CareTeam, so the family does not depend on one text to one contact.1 Your parent can also press HELP on the phone or watch at any time. Questions people ask

Does Apple Watch fall detection call 911?
It calls the local emergency number automatically if the wearer is still after the countdown and does not cancel. The call depends on a cellular, Wi-Fi calling or satellite connection.
Will my parent’s family be told?
Apple texts the emergency contacts in the Medical ID after the call ends. KinectedCare can additionally notify the whole CareTeam.
Is fall detection on by default?
It turns on automatically for people who entered an age of 55 or older. For others, you turn it on in the Watch app on iPhone.
Can it trigger by mistake?
Yes. High-impact activity may be detected as a fall. The wearer can cancel during the countdown.
Does KinectedCare detect falls?
No. Fall detection is the watch’s own feature. When a fall-detection-capable smartwatch detects a fall, the watch’s operating system handles the emergency response, and KinectedCare notifies the CareTeam.
Does KinectedCare replace emergency services?
No. KinectedCare is not a medical device or an emergency service. If someone may be hurt, call local emergency services first.
